A Complete Guide to Area Rug Pads

Traditional Rugs

We usually refer to persian and oriental rugs as traditional rugs. Traditional rugs originated in Persia, now Iran, and have since come to be made in various countries. Traditional rugs are generally classified as the "classical" area rugs. They can be considered as more formal, refined designs usually including much detail within the designs.

Originally, since rugs were made in Persia(Iran), they were made in various cities or towns. Rugs from each city are named after that city. Many famous names of traditional rugs (cities) are Sarouk, Kashan, Kerman, Bidjar, Tabriz, Isfahan and Naiin to name a few. These designs are representative of the city they were produced in. Today's traditional styles of rugs can be found made in India, Pakistan, China, Belgium, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Iran. Weavers in these countries have reproduced the original traditional designs as well as deviations on the originals.

Allover, Medallion and Open Field Designs
Traditional rugs can either be classified as allover designs, medallion designs or open field designs.
An Allover design is one that has a continuous pattern throughout the rug without a dominant center motif. A Medallion design is one that possesses a dominant center point, or medallion, that is either surrounded by design or by solid field.
An Open field design is one in which there is a dominant center medallion with a large solid field of color around the medallion.

Cleaning area rugs
Don't be alarmed! Most area rugs can be spot cleaned fairly easily. For most spills, first try to blot out the spot with a damp sponge. If this does not work, on all fibers except for silk, try adding a little mild liquid detergent to some lukewarm water and scrub the area with a soft scrub brush. This should do the job. On even more stubborn stains, please refer to our
spot cleaning guide.

Rotation
It is a great idea, whenever possible, to rotate your area and oriental rugs and rug pads at least once a year. Like everything else, rugs and rug pads can wear due to traffic and the more even the wear, the longer your area rug and rug pad will last. This holds true to fading as well. Rotating your area rug once a year will prevent any obvious or prolonged wear pattern or fading spots.

We love our animals but.....
One of the few stains that may not come out perfectly is animal stain. Please try to avoid animal accidents on area rugs and in the event that something does happen, make sure to get to it right away. Once animal stains dry in most fibers, it is almost impossible to remove the stain, not to mention the odor left behind. Animal hair is not harmful to area rugs and can be easily vacuumed off as often as you would like.
