Rug Pads for use on Tile Floors

Rugs and area rugs on tile floors should always have a rug pad under them. A rug pad will prlong the life of your rug while also adding the safety of being non slip. Tile floors can be slippery and the proper non slip rug pad is necessary to prevent accidents.

Jute and Rubber Non Slip Rug Pad
A popular non slip rug pad is one made of jute and rubber. The surface is a textured recycled jute that grabs your rug and keeps it in place on top of the pad. The bottom is a real layer of solid rubber that safely holds to the floor, preventing slipping. The most important thing to consider with this type of rug pad is the material. It is best of the jute surface is a recycled jute as this is mold and mildew resistant as well as nonallergenic. The rubber should be a real layer of rubber that is sewn on to the jute, not sprayed on. Many rug pads today consist of a sprayed on application of a rubber like substance or an adhesive to give it a sticky, non slip feel. Unfortunately, this process causes break down of the material and could damage your floor. There are two non slip rug pads, Durahold and Ultra Premium, that are made in the USA and consist of quality materials. Both of these pads are about 1/4 of an inch thick.

Open Weave Non Slip Rug Pads
Many of us have seen the waffle looking rug pads, or the ones with holes. This type of rug pad is meant to prevent rugs from slipping and will do the same for rugs on tile floors. In general, this type of non slip pad is less expensive than the solid non slip pads and is about half the thickness, they vary from 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch. The important thing to consider here it the material. Many non slip rug pads are coated with an adhesive to give them a sticky, non slip feel. this is an inexpensive way to produce the pad. This may cause damage to your floor by sticking its design right onto the tile floor. There are organic non slip rug pads available without this damaging coating. they cost a little more but are worth it in the long run. It should be noted that for optimal protection to the back of rugs that get a lot of traffic and wear, a more solid pad is preferred as a foundation for the rug.

Recycled Jute Rug Pad
If your rug on tile floor is big or heavy enough and does not have a slipping issue, then a quality recycled jute rug pad works great. Here, there is no rubber or non slip additive, simply 100% recycled felt jute. This rug pad protects the rug and the floor and feels nice to walk on. It is mold and mildew resistant and does not contain any odor. Jute rug pads are available in different weights, from 20 ounce up to 40 ounce. The higher the weight, the more dense the pad, the better the protection and feel to walk on. Again, since this rug pad does not prevent slipping, use it only under those rugs on tile floors that do not slip.
