A Complete Guide to Area Rug Pads

Rug Storage Tips

Rolling or folding?
It is always best to roll your rug for storage. Rugs can take up space and we know rolling is not always as convenient as we would like. Rolling a rug into the shape of a tube helps to avoid any creases when the rug is unrolled again. In the event that your space only allows you to fold your rug, this is okay too and just be aware of the fcat that you may encounter some creases when you unroll your rug at a letr date. These creases do clear with use and even faster if you rub the area of the crease to loosen the finers.

Places to store rugs
It is best to store area and oriental rugs in a climate controlled envirmonment. Any room or area of the main part of the home is suitable for storage. Try to avoid storing rugs in basements or attics as they are areas of fluctuating temperatures and humidity levels.

Avoid moths
Moths love wool products and if your rug is made of wool, special attention is required during storage of your rug. Moths usually accumulate in areas where there is no circulation. When a rug is stored, there is very little, if any, circulation around or within the rug. This is normal and leads to the fact that depending on how long the storage time is, it is a good idea to occassionally unroll your rug, vacuum it and rool it up again for storage. For storage of more than a month, it is good to unroll the rug once a month and vacuum it. For shoter term storage, this is not necessary.

Cleaning area rugs
Don't be alarmed! Most area rugs can be spot cleaned fairly easily. For most spills, first try to blot out the spot with a damp sponge. If this does not work, on all fibers except for silk, try adding a little mild liquid detergent to some lukewarm water and scrub the area with a soft scrub brush. This should do the job. On even more stubborn stains, please refer to our
spot cleaning guide.

Rotation
It is a great idea, whenever possible, to rotate your area and oriental rugs and rug pads at least once a year. Like everything else, rugs and rug pads can wear due to traffic and the more even the wear, the longer your area rug and rug pad will last. This holds true to fading as well. Rotating your area rug once a year will prevent any obvious or prolonged wear pattern or fading spots.

We love our animals but.....
One of the few stains that may not come out perfectly is animal stain. Please try to avoid animal accidents on area rugs and in the event that something does happen, make sure to get to it right away. Once animal stains dry in most fibers, it is almost impossible to remove the stain, not to mention the odor left behind. Animal hair is not harmful to area rugs and can be easily vacuumed off as often as you would like.
